Abstract
Purpose: This study examines the factors influencing college students' program selection, particularly the balance between passion and practicality. It explores how financial capacity and career aspirations shape academic choices.
Method: A qualitative method with a narrative approach was used, employing a semi-structured interview questionnaire to gather in-depth insights. Purposive sampling selected seven (7) participants from Bernardo College's college department. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify key themes in students' decision-making.
Results: Findings highlight three key themes: (1) The Impact of Financial Challenges on Educational Choices and Stability, (2) The Impact of Passion and Commitment on Career Success, and (3) Navigating the Crossroads of Passion and Practicality. Financial constraints significantly influence students' decisions, often leading them to prioritize affordability over personal interests. Family support helps alleviate financial stress, emphasizing the need for expanded financial aid, scholarships, and flexible payment options. Career aspirations are shaped by financial considerations, industry demand, and personal goals.
Some students have clear career objectives, while others remain uncertain, balancing passion with financial stability. Despite initial hesitation, many students ultimately find fulfillment in their choices as they recognize career growth opportunities.
Conclusion & Recommendation: Institutions should enhance financial support mechanisms and provide clearer guidance on educational expenses. Schools and educators should offer career counseling, internships, and alternative learning paths to help students make informed choices. Incoming students are encouraged to explore financial aids and align aspirations with industry demands. Future research should examine the long-term effects of financial considerations on career satisfaction and job market trends.
